Hand and Upper Quadrant Therapy

The occupational therapist is an expert who has the knowledge and understanding of the complexity of the hand and the phases of its recovery to promote an optimal return to function of the affected limb.

Occupational therapists can carry out assessments of the hand and upper limb, and will want to act on muscle strength, joint amplitude, pain, oedema and sensitivity to optimize function of the affected limb.

He may use a variety of interventions to optimize upper limb function. For example
  • Exercise and mobilization program
  • Pain management techniques
  • Edema control
  • Wound and scar care
  • Functional activity program
  • Orthotic fabrication assistance
