Pediatric physiotherapy LaSalle

What is pediatric physiotherapy?
Pediatric physiotherapy is a domain of physiotherapy for children aged 0-17 years old. Treating conditions can range from orthopaedic issues such as general strains and sprains but can also include postural problems, flat/turned head, and delayed or impaired development. A paediatric physiotherapist will evaluate motor function, tone, flexibility, and strength to provide the best exercises needed for your child.

When should you consult a pediatric physiotherapist?
A pediatric physiotherapist can be consulted for any of the following conditions:
- post-surgery rehabilitation
- muscle or ligament sprains/strains
- scoliosis
- torticollis
- plagiocephaly
- feet turned inward or outwards
- gross motor delay

Or if you notice any of the following behaviours:
- your child keeps their head turned/bent to one side
- your child does not tolerated tummy time well from 0-3months
- your child is not rolling after 7 months
- your child is not sitting unsupported after 8 months
- your child is not crawling after 8 months
- your child is not walking after 16 months
- your child does not run/jump after 2 years old
- you notice your child having difficulty with balance and coordination
- you notice your child has an abnormal walking pattern -you notice your child always sits in the ‘W’ position

Did you know?
Did you know that not all babies follow the same timeline when hitting their developmental milestones? There is a recommended window when rolling, sitting, standing, walking should be achieved however every infant is different. If you are concerned your child is falling behind in their motor development, they may just need a little extra help. Often this happens not because of an underlying medical condition but due to a lack of core strength. Babies go through stages of development in which certain positions will help build different muscle groups. At times they may skip or avoid these positions/movements because they are too challenging for them which can be due to poor core development. This can be improved by getting evaluated by a pediatric physiotherapist who will provide you with a treatment plan and home exercise program to get your baby back on track and prevent future issues.
