What is occupational therapy?
Occupational therapy (OT) is a healthcare profession focused on helping people of all ages develop, recover, or maintain the skills needed for daily living and meaningful activities, also known as "occupations." These activities can range from basic self-care tasks like dressing and eating to more complex skills such as writing, working, or socializing. Occupational therapists take a holistic approach, considering not just physical abilities but also cognitive, emotional, and environmental factors that may affect a person’s function and independence. Through personalized assessments and interventions, OT empowers individuals to overcome challenges caused by injury, illness, disability, or developmental delays, supporting their ability to lead fulfilling, independent lives.
What else can occupational therapy be beneficial for?
Occupational therapy is beneficial for many areas of everyday life beyond hand therapy. It helps people of all ages improve their ability to perform daily tasks such as dressing, eating, cooking, writing, or using tools and technology. For children, OT can support the development of fine motor skills needed for school activities like handwriting and cutting. For adults recovering from injuries or surgeries, it helps restore independence in self-care and work-related tasks. Older adults may benefit from OT through strategies that promote safety at home, prevent falls, and maintain mobility. Occupational therapists also adapt environments, recommend assistive devices, and teach new ways to complete tasks—ensuring individuals can live as independently and comfortably as possible in their daily routines
