Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a common condition caused by compression of the median nerve as it passes through the carpal tunnel in the wrist. This can lead to symptoms such as numbness, tingling, pain, and weakness in the thumb, index, middle, and part of the ring finger.
People with CTS often report difficulty with fine motor tasks like buttoning clothes, typing, or gripping small objects.
Occupational therapy plays a key role in both conservative and post-surgical management of carpal tunnel syndrome. OT interventions may include activity modification to reduce strain on the wrist, ergonomic education (especially for computer or assembly line work), nerve gliding exercises, and the use of wrist splints to keep the wrist in a neutral position.
