De Quervain's Tendinitis

You had a baby a few weeks ago and you are suddenly experiencing persistent pain in your wrist? Did you know that the postpartum period is more conducive to develop tendinitis in that area?

Several factors are involved

During pregnancy, the body secretes a hormone called relaxin. It aims to increase the laxity of the ligaments and increase joint mobility in order to facilitate labour during childbirth, among other things. As this hormone remains in the body for weeks, it makes the body more prone to musculoskeletal injuries. The new mom has to adapt to several changes and to her body as well! She finds herself holding a baby for long periods of the day, often while performing a second task with the other hand! For nursing mothers, being in one position for an extended period of time also contributes to causing damage to the upper body. Shoulders and neck can also be painful. It is well known that nights with a baby can have frequent interruptions. Since body recovery happens primarily during the night, lack of sleep has a direct effect on healing.

De Quervain’s Tendinitis

This frequent type of tendinitis in the new mom is De Quervain’s tendinitis. This is an inflammation of the tendons of the thumb and wrist, which is particularly painful for the mother when she picks up her baby. It also greatly hinders the movement of the thumb and it is sometimes called "video game tendinitis", in reference to the movement the thumb makes when playing a video game.

To relieve the pain

In order to relieve tendinitis, the primary advice is to rest the tendon. Since this is impossible for a new mom to do, it is advisable to limit the movements of the thumb and wrist by keeping a neutral position when lifting your little one. Ice can also be applied if you feel pain during rest. If you think you suffer from tendinitis, don't hesitate to quickly consult a health professional. This is a condition that can be treated in a short period of time if treated quickly!
